Letterbox 0.15

This release brings an installer, an icon, and visual enhancements. The first version decent enough to send to my mom.

What’s New

  • [feature] Letterbox now has friendly installer (it uninstalls, too :).
  • [added] We have an icon, courtesy of ssunis. Also, the plugin now appears as a file, rather than a folder.
  • [bugfix] The message pane is once again flush against the top of the window.
  • [added] The installer automatically shows the message pane, to help folks who have it collapsed.
  • [changed] The divider is now 1 pixel wide and dark gray, like the one between the mailboxes and the message list.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. I want an Outlook-style message list with each message on two rows!
    • Yeah, me too. Patience…
  2. All I see is the message list — where’s the message pane?
    • If your message pane is collapsed, move your cursor to the right side of the Mail window. Your cursor should change to a double-arrow cursor. Now double-click, and the message pane will appear.
  3. Does it work in OS X 10.3.9?
    • Apparently yes. I haven’t tested it, but I’ve had a few reports that it works okay. I won’t put much effort into maintaining 10.3.x compatibility, though…

Todo List

Your feedback is very welcome. I plan on tackling the following items as time permits:

  1. Decent website and SVN access to the code for those who are interested.
  2. A more fool-proof installer.
  3. Preference pane to switch between ‘Message right of list’, ‘Message below list’, and ‘Message left of list’
  4. Menu items and keyboard shortcuts for same.
  5. Options for alternate-colored-rows in the message list, and a few other tweaks.
  6. (Eventually) An Outlook-style view with message subjects on a second row below the date and sender info. This will probably be tough & I’ll be recruiting helpers for this task.

Known Bugs or Issues

  • [known-bug] After entering a search in the search field, the message list column sizes go wonky. Clicking on another mailbox resolves the issue.
  • [known-issue] GPGMail’s banner inherits the dark gray background of the plugin. Not a big deal, but might want to clean this up somehow.
  • [known-issue] The message pane collapses to the right side as soon as it’s less than 50% of the width. It should permit narrower sizes rather than collapsing all the way to zero.

Hi Aaron, thank you for this useful bundle!

I’d like to ask you if it could be possible to integrate the Activity Panel (command+0) at the bottom of the mailboxes column.

What do you think about it?

This is fantastic! Just a quick Q - is it possible to build a Outlook2003 look? i.e. Have the subject under the ‘From’ field etc?

Version 0.11 vs. 0.15 - Copy of post to the GPGMail-users list, cf. .
    ——–
    Hi,

In a previous post to the list GPGMail users, I had remarked that the installation of Letterbox 0.11 was not only successfull, but that it didn’t interfere with the functionality of the GPGMailBundle.

    Everything worked fine.

I was trying to help a friend in Spain who couldn’t install 0.11 because he was afraid of using the Terminal, and I checked again Letterbox’s web page.

I found 0.15, which is the binary installer. Out of curiosity I ran it.

The results in Mail.app was OK as far as Letterbox is concerned, but GPGMail stopped functioning, e.g. trying to Authenticate a signed message produced an error message ‘Cannot cache image’.

So I went back to 0.11 (I don’t have to enable Bundles in Terminal, I have done that long ago, I really forgot when), and everything is just fine.

Ooh, thanks for the heads-up, Charly.

Don’t know if this bug’s been pointed out to you yet - but with Junk Filtering set to Automatic, when you click on a message that’s been labelled as Junk, in the message pane the brown Junk Mail header (”Mail thinks this message is Junk Mail”) is there for a spilt second and then disappears.

This means if a message has been wrongly labelled as Junk, the “Not Junk” button in the Junk Mail header isn’t there.

Thought you’d like to know. Am loving this plugin - thanks for all your hard work.

  8. H Says:

Forgot to mention, this also happens to messages with the blue “that contain unloaded images” header.

  9. Aaron Harnly Says:

Ack, you’re right. I fixed the shifted-down bug by always lining up the scrollview with the top of the message pane, but forgot that sometimes the scrollview is supposed to be shifted down. Thanks, I’ll add this to the to-dos.

After installing Letterbox o.15 Mail.app won’t run. it starts, tries to gather mail, then quits. What have I done wrong?

    Hello,

Well, I’ve tried it and I like it, however, I only have a 13″ MacBook and I think it’s just not a big enough display.

    How do I uninstall Letterbox?

    Thanks.
